Romance scam
Someone builds an online romance over weeks or months, then invents an emergency and asks you for money.
Informational only — not legal or financial advice.
How it works
- You meet online; they're attentive, affectionate, and move fast emotionally.
- They always have a reason not to meet or video-call.
- Eventually a crisis appears — medical bill, travel, customs — and they ask for money.
Red flags
- Strong feelings declared quickly, but never an in-person meeting.
- Requests for money, gift cards, or crypto — often “just this once.”
- Stories that keep changing or escalating.
What to do
- Slow down and talk to a friend or family member about it.
- Do a reverse-image search of their photos.
- Insist on a live video call before trusting anything financial.
What NOT to do
- Do not send money, gift cards, or crypto to someone you haven't met.
- Do not share intimate photos or financial details.
