Family “new number / emergency” scam
A message claims to be your child or relative texting from a “new number,” with an urgent need for money.
Informational only — not legal or financial advice.
How it works
- You get a text: “Hi mom/dad, this is my new number.”
- They describe an urgent problem — lost phone, locked account, a bill due now.
- They ask you to send money quickly and keep chatting on the new number.
Red flags
- A “new number” plus an urgent request for money.
- Pressure to act fast and not call the old number.
- Reluctance to take a normal phone or video call.
What to do
- Call your relative on their old, known number to check.
- Ask a question only the real person would know.
- Slow down — a real emergency survives a 5-minute verification.
What NOT to do
- Do not send money or gift cards based on a text alone.
- Do not save the new number as them until you've verified by voice.
